Re-election of Donald Trump: bad omen for China?
This would be a first in American history. Chinese President Xi Jinping was invited to Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony on January 20, this invitation coming as Donald Trump does not seem to want to let down his guard in the trade war with China. While no head of state has so far made an official visit to the United States during an inauguration ceremony, the future spokesperson for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed the invitation during the television show "Fox & Friends". While the Chinese president has not yet responded to this invitation, the president of El Salvador, the Italian Prime Minister or the Argentine president would also be among the guests.
Donald Trump confirmed, Monday, November 25, that his first economic measures after his inauguration in January would be to impose a 25% tax on Canadian and Mexican products entering the United States. Chinese products would see 10% customs duties added.
These three countries are the United States' largest trading partners. The president-elect justified these decisions by the opioid and immigration crises.
"This tax will remain in effect until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal immigrants stop this invasion of our country!"» , specified Donald Trump.
The increase in customs duties is one of the keys to the future economic policy of the president-elect, who is not afraid to relaunch the trade wars started during his first term.
Competition between China and the United States has been intensifying for some time, long before Trump won the election. The situation has become particularly tense under the Biden administration due to tariffs and geopolitical disagreements ranging from Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the future of Taiwan. However, there has been dialogue, with several senior US officials traveling to Beijing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised to work with the new Trump administration, but he also used his latest meeting with President Joe Biden to warn Washington that a "new Cold War should not be fought and cannot be won". He added that "containing China is reckless, unacceptable and doomed to failure."
In fact, Joe Biden spent four years building friendships across Asia with countries like South Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam, all in an effort to contain China.
China has the world's largest army and navy, and Washington fears the country is building a larger nuclear arsenal.
Both leaders project a kind of muscular nationalism. Xi Jinping's dream is the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" and Donald Trump believes that only he can "make America great again". Both promise that they are working towards a new golden age for their countries.
Trump's 'golden age' for America includes 60% tariffs on goods made in China. But Beijing is in no mood for a second trade war. He has his own problems.
