Morocco welcomes the re-election of Donald Trump
The re-election of Donald Trump as president of the United States was welcomed by the Moroccan authorities. In December 2020, Donald Trump recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, a territory whose postcolonial status is unresolved, with Morocco controlling more than 80% of it in the West (and thus claiming its "Moroccanness"), and the Polisario Front movement supported by Algeria less than 20% in the East, all being separated by a wall of sand and a buffer zone under the control of UN peacekeepers. The conflict in this region with its rich mining base and fish-rich coasts has lasted since 1975.
A vast desert expanse of 266,000 km2 in the north of Mauritania, Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is the last territory on the African continent whose post-colonial status has not been resolved. Since 2007, Rabat has proposed an autonomy plan under its sovereignty, while the Polisario separatists, supported by Algiers, demand a self-determination referendum planned by the UN when a ceasefire was signed in 1991, but never materialized.
The online newspaper Le360, known to be close to the royal palace, as well as the Moroccan press widely welcomed the victory of Donald Trump, elected following the American presidential election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The 47th President of the United States Unis is "a leading ally," said the daily L'Opinion.
Wednesday, November 6 at the beginning of the afternoon, King Mohammed VI sent him a message of congratulations. The king sent Mr. Trump "his best wishes for success in his high office and in his efforts in the service of the American people", according to the text released by the official MAP agency. Morocco and the United States are "united by a historic alliance and a strategic partnership that have stood the test of time," said the king, for whom this relationship is "a driving force in the service of peace, security and prosperity in the Middle East, Africa and beyond.
Thus, the re-election of Donald Trump in a conflict whose resolution is the number one objective of Moroccan foreign policy was long awaited in the country. "I hope that he will finish what he started, namely opening an American consulate in Dakhla or Laâyoune," declared Hassan Alaoui, director of the Maroc Diplomatique newspaper, who said he was "relieved" by the result of the American election and convinced that "the Democrats, unlike the Republicans, have never firmly supported Morocco in Western Sahara".
During his first term, Donald Trump also promised up to $3 billion in investments - a large part of which would have been reserved for Moroccan banks, hotels and the renewable energy sector. Rabat hopes that this other promise will soon become reality, after four years of inaction under the Biden presidency.
